Objectives
-
Joy of Learning: To provide our students with Applied Learning opportunities – learning that involves doing and applying, learning about the real world, and learning for life.
-
Aspiration: To allow our students to discover their interests and make informed education and career choices through the experience and learning in the polytechnic/ITE.
-
Part of the school’s effort to encourage our Secondary 2 and 3 students with interest in the different subjects (Science/Math/Geography/POA/English) to take up ApLMs.
Through the ApLM, we hope that our students will develop a stronger sense of purpose and motivation to acquire knowledge and skills of the subject.
Principles of Accounts Applied Learning Modules (ApLM)
During the March school holidays, our Secondary 3 Principles of Accounts (POA) students participated in a three-day course, “Marketing in Action,” conducted by Ngee Ann Polytechnic. Equipped with knowledge of how businesses operate and are accounted for during their POA lessons in school (e.g. accounting for cash, receivables, and inventory), this course allowed students to take a step further by exploring an important front-end aspect of business management.
Through the programme, they acquired a basic understanding of a key marketing concept—the “4 Ps”: Product, Place, Promotion, and Price—through various case studies and real-life fieldwork.
The concept of the 4 Ps was further reinforced during a learning journey to JEM and Westgate shopping malls, where students conducted research on how different businesses market their products to customers. Thereafter, the students worked in groups to design their own marketing plans. Applying the marketing concepts they had learned, they were able to develop holistic plans that also incorporated accounting principles from their POA lessons.
Overall, it was an enriching opportunity for students to broaden their understanding of the various aspects of running a business beyond POA.
